No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.

"Something we were withholding made us weak, until we found out that it was ourselves we were withholding from our land of living, and forthwith found salvation in surrender."

— On this day in 1961, an 86-year-old Robert Frost approached a podium in Washington, D.C. to read one of his poems. It was Inauguration Day, and John F. Kennedy had invited him to be there. Frost had written something specifically for the occasion, but he was an old man with weak eyes and couldn’t read it, so he recited one of his others — The Gift Outright — from memory. This is a piece of it. For some reason, I think it is a lovely fit with this, one of my favorite poems from one of my favorite writers. It’s beauty, though, is that it condenses into four lovely lines the commitment not to withhold anything anymore, to face your own soul, and to discover the beauty that lies beneath stripped bark.
